How far is Stonehenge from Salisbury?

The road distance from Salisbury city centre to the Stonehenge Visitor Centre is approximately 9.5 miles (15 kilometres). The route follows the A360 north out of Salisbury across Salisbury Plain. There are no major towns between the two points, so journey times are consistent and predictable.

Why does the bus take longer than a taxi?

The Stonehenge Tour public bus takes 35 to 45 minutes because it follows a slightly longer route and stops at Old Sarum before reaching Stonehenge. Our private shuttle takes 35 minutes because it travels direct with no intermediate stops. A taxi takes 20 minutes because it can use a more direct route and does not stop anywhere.

How long should I allow for a full day trip?

Plan for at least 4 to 5 hours in total. The shuttle from Salisbury takes 35 minutes each way, and most visitors spend 2 to 3 hours at Stonehenge including the visitor centre exhibition, the stone circle walk, and the shuttle bus from the visitor centre to the stones. An early departure on the 10:15 shuttle gets you back to Salisbury comfortably by early afternoon.

How long to spend at Stonehenge

Most visitors spend 2 to 3 hours at Stonehenge. The site consists of three main areas: the Visitor Centre building (with exhibitions, the Neolithic house reconstructions and the cafe), the shuttle ride from the Visitor Centre to the stone circle itself (2 minutes each way), and the stone circle walk (approximately 1 mile around the outer path).

Visitors with a keen interest in the history of Stonehenge, or those with children who want to explore slowly, should allow 3 to 4 hours. Visitors who simply want to walk around the stones and take photographs can cover the main experience in under 90 minutes.
